What is the Jamestowne Society

and its

Kansas Missouri company?

Jamestowne Society
The Kansas-Missouri Company of the Jamestowne Society promotes interest in education and mutual improvement of its members by honoring and paying homage to their Ancestors who settled at Jamestowne, Virginia between 1607 and 1700. Further, the Company upholds the principles which resulted in a government of liberty regulated by law.

Members of the Jamestowne Society must be descendants of those who owned land or had domiciles on Jamestowne Island prior to 1700. They may, also, be descendants of stockholders in the London Company of Virginia, or may be descendants of those who served as a Burgess for the General Assembly of Virginia during that time.

Lineage research is begun by finding a Sponsor, that is, a member of the Jamestown Society, who will not only sponsor you for membership, but steer you through the necessary steps for membership. The Sponsor will help you identify a “qualifying ancestor” in a little booklet published by the society of qualifyin Jamestowne ancestors.

Please do not expect the Sponsor to do the anestor research for you. Your Sponsor, however, will guide you through the process of becoming a member. A copy of the qualifying ancestor booklet of the Jamestowne Society can be purchased from the Society which contains over 1500 names of individuals who the Society believes qualify as original Jamestowne ancestors. These qualifying ancestors are your target ancestors. This booklet is available through the Society’s website: www.jamestowne.org

The Kansas Missouri Company
The Kansas-Missouri Company of the Jamestowne Society was founded May 5, 1984 by Mr. Berry McCormack Smith who served as the founding Governor from 1984 to 1987. The Company was chartered by the national Jamestown Society on May 12, 1984 and incorporated November 7, 1984. Membership is by invitation and in accordance with Jamestowne Society Bylaws. Once a member has completed the application process and has been accepted as a member in the national society, then that person is eligible for membership in a local company, such as the Kansas Missouri Company. This local level group provides you with opportunities for the fellowship of other members, and learning experiences through informative programs presented at meetings.

Bi-Yearly Company Meetings
The Kansas-Missouri Company conducts meetings twice a year in the Metropolitan area of Kansas City. The spring meeting is held on an appropriate Saturday in May, the fall meeting is held in November. The Fall Meeting is the annual business meeting. Generally, the meetings are held at a Country Club and includes a luncheon with a guest speaker who reports on historical events or some cultural facet occurring during the settlement of Jamestowne prior to 1700. Membership dues for the Kansas Missouri Company begins with an initial $15.00 donation by new members and then annual dues of $10.00 which are payable in November.

Along with the National Society, the objectives of all Jamestowne Companies are to discover and record the names of all living descendants of those early settlers who made great sacrifices to establish our great nation; and to unite these descendants to honor the memory of their settler ancestors.
